With 1042rwhp and a PB so far of 8.166 at 163.99mph Michael claims his EB to be the quickest car using an SOHC 4L Ford engine.
Michael Ryan’s EB has progressed from a stock ex-fleet car into a full-chassis race car shooting for sevens, and still with an SOHC 4L engine. “I bought the EB from a car yard in Parramatta in April 1999 as my first car” begins the 33 year old sheet metal tradesman.
Like many young blokes with their first set of wheels he started modifying it, and after playing with nitrous for a bit he decided to turbocharge it. After a couple of years of development, and a couple of motors, “The car went on to make 440rwkW and ran 10.9sec at WSID with the BTR 4-speed auto”.
The BTR got replaced with a C4 and then a Powerglide, and other modifications were made to improve the setup within the limits of standard bodyshell. It also got a very serious motor built by Atomc Performance which is “making 777rwkW (1042rwhp, as seen above) with 39psi, but with a very mild boost setting I could only manage 8.9sec (on the quarter mile) because it was hit-and-miss with traction. Having so much power is useless if you can’t put it to the track so the full-chassis build began”.
“Cutting up a near-perfect standard body was hard to get my head around” Michael recalled. He also said that, although he was comfortable with performing the majority of the metal fabrication work which would need to be done, “finding all the info to build a car this way and make it all work was difficult”.
“The whole build was about getting it down to the least possible weight. The car is now 200kg lighter and can use all its power.” With the boost set to reach only 29psi (compared to 39psi on the dyno) the full chassis has so far seen him improve down to the 8.166 at 163.99mph mentioned in the title and seen in the video clip above. He is now aiming for sevens with all 39psi wound in.
