Wild! TTV8 Street Ford

Performance Garage's resident Ford expert and editor of Street Fords magazine Roy Velardi gives us a behind the scenes look at the build of his mental twin-turbo XY Falcon GT replica, a project dubbed 'Wild Violence'

As with many builds, this one began unexpectedly while I was not even in the market for a car. I had been bidding on a windback sunroof on eBay and the sunroof in question happened to be leaning against a black XY GT replica. That replica, as it turns out, was actually a very rare Ford indeed.

It turned out to be a 1971 XY K code Fairmont that was fitted ex-factory with a 351 Cleveland,  4 speed Top Loader gearbox and nine inch. Raising the stakes in the rarity department, the XY was factory built with Wild Violet paint with Parchment interior.

After a few hours trying to convince the owner to sell the XY when we picked up the sunroof, my brothers Frank, Tony and I eventually ‘stole’ it for the measly sum of $1500! Not bad for a Falcon that once won the burnout comp at Kandos!

The previous owner from Mudgee NSW had cut out the inner wheel tubs to donate them to another Falcon (don’t ask me why!) and was originally going to scrap the car once he removed the driveline!

Since I was never looking to restore the car to stock standard appearance, a set of mini tubs were fitted along with a McDonald Bros triangulated street four- link. Naturally the windback sunroof was also added.

Next up Wild Violence was blasted inside and out with the body repaired by my brothers (V Restos) and cousin. It was then repainted in Wild Violet using Glasurit paint.

The front suspension has been entirely rebuilt using Pedders Suspension and a 300mm Hopper Stopper brake upgrade was added to help pull the beast up.

The rear end consists of a custom Ford nine-inch/Currie Enterprises chromoly sheet-metal housing with Strange 35-spline axles, Strange alloy centre and Detroit locker. Rear brakes are RRS and QA1 coilover shocks are fitted. The gearbox will be a race-prepared billet-filled Ford C4 by Al’s Race Glides.

Once rolling I decided to up the stakes in the power department, putting aside the plans for a big cube naturally aspirated nitrous sniffing animal and adding a pair of Precision 67mm turbos! The cubes will still be ‘decent’ and the power aplenty (around 1300hp)

For fabrication purposes a ‘dummy’ World Man'O'War block was fitted along with the World 18 degree alloy heads that have been CNC ported by Trick and Mansweto Racing.

I chose a few Aussie-made products along the way too. Controlling the entire show is a Haltech Platinum Sport 2000 ECU and the ignition is handled by IC&E.

Fuel supply duties are courtesy of Weldon Racing Pumps, with the rate of supply from the single high capacity pump easily adjusted by an electronic control unit. The engine itself will be built by ace engine builders Trick and Mansweto Racing in Sydney.

Since I was going twin turbo, Wild Violence headed over to Racers Choice for Stuart to weave his magic wand by fabricating a custom set of turbo headers. Stuart has worked on my XW in the past and he was my only choice when it came time to do the XY.

It then returned home to be fitted out with all new glass, rubbers, restored stainless trims by Allan McCoy and the custom Auto Meter filled GT dash. That dash was re-chromed by Chrometech. Dynamat sound deadening material was fitted to the floor and the headliner was also fitted.

All new parts are going into this build so only the best reproduction GT bits were acquired from the number one GT parts supplier Bob Matic from Ford Muscle Parts.

Wild Violence then headed back over to Racers Choice to have the custom piping made for the air to air intercooler setup. That intercooler design came about after a few ‘cardboard’ creations in the shed. Stuart also fitted the HDi intercooler clamps and fitted the dual Turbosmart Race Port blow off valves.

Whilst there he also fabricated the remainder of the custom exhaust system out of mandrel bent 3in mild steel. It also included Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers from Summit and electric QTP exhaust cut-outs.

Since then Wild Violence has returned home once again for more work. The dummy engine has been removed and now sits with Trick and Mansweto Racing for preparation and assembly. I will now continue to piece the XY together including the braking system, wiring, fuel system and interior.

Stay tuned to Performance Garage and Street Fords magazine for further updates.
