For traditionalists, Marco Regalado's 1970 Datsun 510 may be nothing short of heresy. But for those who appreciate automotive builds that dare to push boundaries, his LS-powered classic is right up your street. See more builds.

The Divisive Art of LS Swapping

When LS engines first started appearing in engine bays of beloved Japanese classics like the 240SX and FD RX-7, purists were up in arms. Fast forward to today, and attitudes have shifted: this American V8 has earned its place both in drift competitions and DIY garage projects. People now find themselves torn between praising the LS V8's innate power and lamenting its seemingly disruptive presence.

Marco, who already owns several versions of the Datsun 510—each powered by traditional Japanese engines—found the idea of an American V8 invigorating.

"The unique build is truly unparalleled,"

he says, praising the original owner's collaboration with Lucky's Speed Shop in Freemont, California.

Troubleshooting and Personalising

Purchasing someone else's project isn't always smooth sailing. Marco encountered a few obstacles but considered them opportunities for customisation.

Fixing these issues allowed me to make the car uniquely mine," he notes.

Safety and Performance Upgrades

One of Marco's first tasks was to rectify the braking system. He introduced a 2.54-cm bore clutch master and customised the brake pedal assembly to function seamlessly. High-performance Z06 calipers and Wilwood rotors were also added to ensure optimal stopping power.

Wheel modifications were necessary to accommodate the increase in torque. Custom fender flares were developed and installed, allowing for 43.18-cm by 21.59-cm Volk CE28N wheels upfront and even larger 27.94-cm wide ones at the rear.

The Cascade of Modifications

During an engine check, Marco discovered that the Tremec TK0600 transmission had developed a leak. The repair process led to a slew of other upgrades, including a new 92 mm FAST LSX intake manifold and matching throttle body.

Interior and Exterior Aesthetics

Externally, the car boasts a Lamborghini metallic grey coat, while the interior adopts a race-car ambience. Marco added a retro touch with a Pioneer KP500 sound system, a popular choice in 1970s and 1980s Philippines.

Marco's Take

Marco considers this LS-powered Datsun 510 as one of his favourite builds.

It offers a fresh perspective on traditional 510 builds without skimping on quality. It's a show car from the outside and a race car on the inside,"

He exclaims, extending a huge thank you to Blacktrax Performance in Freemont for helping realize his vision.
