The Future of Car Control

The Future of Car Control

It has been a long time since the idea of turning a life sized car into a remote control one first played on mans thoughts. While countless people have proved that the creation of such a beast is in fact possible, no-one outside the imaginations of Hollywood have used a device to control the car which isnt a dedicated radio controller.

That's exactly what Sony Ericsson wanted to do. Not content to just stop there, they decided to make a real life version of one of the best selling car apps at the moment, Reckless Racing 2. If you don't know the app, it is basically an old school style racing game for smartphones where a user, viewing a car from above, races through a course.

Car hacker James Brighton, was tasked with taking a pair of drop top MG vehicles and enabling them to be controlled by Sony's new Xperia Studio smartphone. Once ready, creator of the app Martin Noriander and journalist Hunter Skipworth, were taken to a secret location to partake in a race of the two cars.

What follows is a pretty interesting example of how far technology has come and how powerful smartphones can be when put in the right hands. How long until we can all control our cars via Bluetooth connections?
