Melbourne's Epic Street Car Scene On Display at MotorEx

Every year, Melbourne's automotive enthusiasts cruise and gather at Australia’s largest premiere custom car show, Meguiar's MotorEx.

As Australia's biggest premier show, MotorEx is renowned for showcasing the top tier of Australian custom cars, featuring some of the most incredible elite builds on display over the two days at the Melbourne Showgrounds. However, an increasingly significant part of the show sets out to celebrate Melbourne's vibrant and diverse street car scene. This year was no exception, and punters came and brought out their rides despite less than ideal weather.

There was a stack of fascinating stuff on display, but when a Summernats Grand Champion rolls through the gates (in the wet) and parks up outside, it surely captures your attention. The latest Summernats champ has been the talk of the town for a while now, and it doesn't go without detractors. Nevertheless, one thing is for certain - you can't criticize Levi for not driving this thing.

If you've been around for a while, you might recall this one. Named 'PURESX,' this 1993 Nissan 180sx has been running around the country to shows and has been featured on the net and in print magazines for years. We found this gem feature from Ignition DVD in 2006! Although it is no longer owned by the original owners, the denim-blue 180 remains largely unchanged from its glory days. As someone who spends far too much time admiring these dirty little '90s Nissans, it was pretty cool to spot this blast from the past out on display.

Right next to the 180, there was this thing. Now, a Suzuki Mighty Boy from the factory didn't come equipped with anything quite as cool as a turbocharged 13B Rotary engine and rear-wheel drive, but we're bloody glad that someone had the brain power to make it happen. This car just oozes cool, and it had a stack of people hanging around it throughout the event. We also found a bit of a shed skid video on the net as well if that tickles your fancy.

Of course, there was an absolute hive of classic Aussie muscle lined up on display, with every model of Aussie built Holden and Ford on show. It’s another great showing from the street car clubs of Melbourne who organise to bring their toys out to MotorEx each year, and just show off their passion for these iconic Australian cars.

One of my personal favourites was this big old Ford Falcon station wagon, with a slightly updated engine combo (Barra) for some extra cool points.

It seems as though the #BarraTheWorld trend is alive and thriving, as these banging six motors were in just about anything and everything. Big old American land yacht? Barra. Little Datto? Barra. Early model Ford? Barra. Iconic '90s Jap car? Barra. You name it, we reckon there was someone with a Barra dropped in one at MotorEx. We’re not mad about it either, just to be clear.

It was an epic two day showcase of some of Melbourne's street car scene and we're wrapped we got to spend some time walking our way through Aeroflow's Bang Shift Boulevard on Real Street at MotorEx. We're already pumped for next year and hey, fingers crossed for some better weather next time around! If you want to check out some more Real Street rides, check out our mates from The Skid Factory who put together this feature on the event + our gallery below.
