Horsepower Hero Eddy Tassone Builds LS-Swapped VK Commodore With His Son

Echoing throughout the rafters of the Summernats Horsepower Heroes dyno hall are the names of some of the legends of the sport - pioneers that helped the performance aftermarket push through seemingly impenetrable barriers of the performance tuning aftermarket, pressure testing components from both Australia and abroad, and in the process, writing themselves in to the history books.

One such man is Eddy Tassone - a Perth-based mechanic and drag racer that stormed over from the wild west in the early 2000s to dominate the dyno cell with his mind-bending twin-turbo 383-cube Holden V8-powered VH Commodore.

The Evolution of 1000hp to 2000hp

Eddy’s win built on the successes of the likes of Rob Vickery and Todd Wilkes with their 1000hp twin-turbo Commodore utes, and prepped the surface for the race to 2000hp, setting the stage for the likes of Craig Munro in his TRYHRD VX Clubsport, Garry Pope’s BLO402 VX SS, Lyle Lemon’s MR PSI and so many more.

Twin-Turbo Ventures: From Street to Strip

Eddy’s business, Active Automotive, grew rapidly when he started messing around with LS engine combinations in the wake of his Summernats domination. It should come as no surprise that his love of twin-turbo, big-cube V8s translated to later model Commodores and he’s been messing around with a few different HSV Coupes running various LS-based twin-turbo engines for the street, top-speed racing and drag racing, depending on how he wants to get his power fix!

VK Commodore Reborn with L98 Upgrade

One recent project that caught our eye was a retina-searing VK Commodore that he purchased for the shop. Seemingly unimpressed with the 'iron lion' Holden V8 that came fitted to the car he charged their new apprentice with removing the 308ci and converting it to a cammed L98 6-litre.

The catch? The apprentice is Eddy’s 15-year old son Jayden, who bowled the entire driveline swap over in just five days!

We’re particularly excited to see that the horsepower bug hasn’t skipped a generation, and look forward to their next father/son project.
