FWD Drag Racing Is A Thing, And This Starlet Is Good At It

This 2JZ-powered Starlet is a torque-steering wild ride to low-9s!

Toyota’s 2JZ inline six cylinder engine rose to internet stardom thanks to its cameo in the original The Fast and The Furious movie, and ever since then Corona-swilling fans of the cult movie have been climbing over one another to transplant the six-banger in to increasingly weirder vehicle platforms.

This one takes the cake for me, though - a front wheel drive Starlet. And no, we’re not talking about one of those wild drag racing Starlets that have been converted to rear wheel drive, this 2JZ has been turned 90 degrees and powers the front wheels of the Oedsted Garage Tuning or ‘Team Ø.G.T’ Starlet.

Hailing from Denmark, the team campaign the wild little racer in the European Front Wheel Drive Championship and recently ran a PB of 9.12sec at 169.21mph, which has got us thinking that the only thing larger than driver Søren Hansen’s forearms from battling the epic torque steer would be his giant, steel…. Wheels for housing the front slicks that put the power to the ground.

The PB was the team’s first run at the event in Malta which was ultimately rained out, and their optimism has us convinced that 8s are just around the corner for this Toyota-powered micro-racer.
