Ford Introduces Track-Only Mustang Dark Horse R

Ford has unleashed a track-exclusive Mustang Dark Horse R, taking the sixth-generation Mustang to a new level. This track-focused beast comes equipped with its own dedicated IMSA racing series.

Ford has been making bold moves with the sixth-generation Mustang, committing to a V8 option while other pony car manufacturers have been phasing them out. The 2024 Mustang Dark Horse R gained attention for housing the most potent naturally aspirated 5.0-litre Coyote engine ever produced by Ford, purpose-built for the track.

The Mustang Dark Horse R represents the third racing-focused version of the sixth-gen Mustang from Ford Performance, following the GT3 and GT4 variants. Designed exclusively for customer track-use, this Mustang boasts a roaring 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, pushing out over 500-horsepower. The car features a Tremec 3160 manual transmission and a Torsen limited slip differential with a 3.73 final drive ratio.

To make the Dark Horse R competition-ready, Ford has implemented essential upgrades, such as improving the oil system, transmission, and differential cooling. A Borla racing exhaust system has been incorporated to enhance its powerful sound.

Safety and fuel capacity were addressed with the addition of a new fuel cell, while a MoTeC data display and logging system provide valuable performance insights. Furthermore, the car is equipped with a roll cage, Recaro FIA racing seat, Sparco-brand quick-release steering wheel, FIA racing harness, and a fire suppression system, complying with rigorous racing safety standards for IMSA.

The series is scheduled to debut in 2024, featuring five to six race weekends at various locations. With two races per weekend, racers will have the opportunity to compete in approximately 10-12 thrilling races. The Dark Horse R has already generated immense interest among customers. The sound of a whole field of 5.0L Coyote V8 engines revving up at the start of the race promises to be an absolute dream for racing enthusiasts.
