Thousands of racing fans from all over the world will make their annual pilgrimage to the mecca of time attack racing – the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge. Hailed as the biggest and the best event of its kind in the world, it attracts the fastest time attack teams from around the globe and pits them against each other over two excitement-filled days.
For those not familiar with time attack racing, the format is not unlike a qualifying lap in traditional motorsport with competitors racing against the clock with the fastest single lap of the event collecting the prize. This format allows almost unlimited modifications making for some seriously spectacular on-track action! Expect to see plenty of high horsepower, light-weight and aero-enhanced cars and make no mistake, these car are very fast. In fact, last year’s champion holds the tin top lap record at the Sydney Motorsport Park!
After two years of Japanese domination, the Aussies have brought the title home in 2012, but can the reigning champion, Nemo Racing, fend off the international and local challengers this year? One thing is for certain – with such a star-studded field it will be a great spectacle!
But the World Time Attack Challenge is so much more than just fast cars going around a track, it’s a motorsport spectacular like no other. With the Pit Zone open to spectators, the area will be buzzing with trade exhibits showcasing the latest and the greatest performance gear while the skid pan will be converted into the largest outdoor car show, with over 400 cars on display!
At midday we take a step back in time and revisit an era when turbocharged race cars ruled the world with the Motul Turbo Legends. This is a unique opportunity to see the cars that shaped the history of Australian and global motorsport back in the 80s and the 90s. Far from being extinct, these fire-breathing monsters are alive and well and just have to be seen in a full flight to be appreciated! As if that wasn’t enough, we have also rounded up 12 of Australian fastest street tuned cars for a top speed shootout. The Turbosmart Flying500 will commence immediately after the Motul Turbo Legends and will take place on the circuit’s main straight.
As the sun goes down we move to the South Circuit for the Tectaloy International Drift Challenge. See the cream of Aussie drifters take on the best of international drift stars. The current D1GP Champion Daigo Saito is the hot favourite but a strong Aussie and Kiwi contingent will do their best to dethrone him.
Two full days of non-stop action, excitement and drama.
