Modern V8s in old school hot rods is nothing new and even the blown examples don't exactly stand out from the crowd like they used too, but when you start to get into multiples of both, people sit up and pay attention.
Ex-pat New Zealander Gordon Tronson lives in the hot rod homeland and even the locals can't believe what he's come up with.
Starting from scratch, this crazy Kiwi built himself one of the most extreme rods we've seen with nothing but an image in his head to guide him.
"I had no models or drawings," says Gordon. "It was originally supposed to be a rat rod too. Oh well!"
It all began in Gordon's shed with some 1.5in steel tubing and an idea. Gordon manually bent himself up what eventually resembled a chassis and got his hands on two Ford Modular V8s, custom fabricating everything needed to create the tidy albeit bizarre brute you see before you.
He knows his way around a welder and has the skills to create pretty much anything with it. Take the drive mechanism for example, transferring the power of not one but two blown V8s to a single Ford C5 transmission. Gordon custom machined a pair of steel sprockets located at the back of each motor that, via a Gates 'Poly Chain' belt, transfers their combined might to a custom two-inch splined input shaft. The whole lot is neatly packaged inside a custom bell housing, pretty cool huh?
The innovation doesn't stop there, with the weight of two engines posing a unique challenge when it came to front suspension. Gordon engineered his own independent front suspension system, incorporating unequal length A-arms and some swanky looking coilovers. Is there anything this guy can't do?
You might notice that this monster is wearing Nevada plates. After seeing so many fakes at Australian car shows, you would be forgiven for thinking that they are just for show but let me assure you, this thing is 100% road legal and they are legit. Don't believe us? Check out the video below to see Gordon enjoying the hot rod he envisioned and built to perfection.
