With over 15 years of experience in extracting the most from any engine placed in front of him, Milos and the Top RPM Motorsport team are masters at what they do. Talented in fabrication, machining, engine building, dyno tuning and just about everything else that goes into the creation of a truly tough car, Milos has made a name for himself as one of Queensland’s performance gurus and will eagerly take on any challenge thrown his way.
The staunch 6.3-second, 2JZ-powered Top RPM Celica drag car is but one example of the workshop’s expertise, with the ‘Motorsport’ part of their name not simply pinned on to sound good. From the pointy end of sport compact drag racing to wild street cars and any application in between, Top RPM Motorsport will optimise a performance package to suit and through the rigours of motorsport have proven time and time again that they know what they’re doing.
“I started my apprenticeship and did everything on performance cars,” Mick tells us. “I pursued that style of mechanical work and that is what saw me working overseas with my father Ivan and brother Mario. We were over there working for one of the princes of Dubai, doing his dyno tuning, engine building and stuff like that. They have that uphill sand drag racing and we built the champion for him. We actually won the championship four years in a row and were the fastest sand drag six-cylinder out there. They’re all big Pro Mod style engines, pretty much top fuel engines.”
Mick may have a lot of experience in all areas of performance modification, the Top RPM name is one fairly new on the scene, growing rapidly over the last five years. “When I first started Top RPM Motorsport I worked from home,” Mick tells us. “I live on a big property and have a shed that fits a one car hoist and another two cars max. Working out of there lasted for about 12 months; it was just out of control. Too many people wanted things done and it got a bit beyond a joke. I decided I had to go to a bigger shed.”
“I created this workshop on the recipe that we had overseas. It has 660 square metres of internal space and we do absolutely everything in-house. We’ve got our own four-wheel-drive dyno to do our own tuning, a full mechanical workshop and handle all of our fabrication, wiring, you name it, in-house. I recently bought out another company so that we can now do all of our own machining. We machine our own titanium valves, make our own beryllium valve seats and work with a lot of exotic materials.
We also do our own CNC porting and with all of this stuff, the knowledge we’ve gained from our various motorsport programs syphons down into street cars. Nothing leaves our premises any more to get work done and we’re pretty much the only workshop in Australia that can genuinely offer a drive in, drive out sort of deal.”
“The business is flourishing,” Mick adds proudly. “We’re very busy and always booked one or two months ahead. We do a lot of mechanical stuff day to day because that’s what pays the bills but the engine shop side of it is killing it as well, we’re flat out. We’ve got guys with decades of experience with building all types of performance engines. I put together all of the overhead cam stuff and my guys nail the pushrod stuff. They're perfectionists and so am I so we work well together. We’ve also got another guy, Carl, who does all of the heads. That’s what he’s been doing his whole life and what he specialises in, he’s a real professional.”
“We aim for excellence,” says Mick. “No matter what we touch, that’s what we aim for. I’m a perfectionist and I always have been. If we do an engine, we aim for the best that can possibly be provided. If we do something mechanically, we do it once and do it right. I would rather only build six or seven cars a year and give the perfect result every time than busy myself with rushed work. I strive to give my customers exactly what they want, what their dream car is. Put it this way; these days everyone promises everything in the world but it’s very hard to get good guys out there. I pride myself in trying to be one of those good guys.”
The Top RPM Motorsport workshop really does have to be seen to be believed. As one of the most comprehensively equipped in the country, there’s not much they aren’t willing to take on so if you find yourself in Queensland, drop past 7 Energy Crescent, Ernest on the Gold Coast and check the place out. Of course, Mick’s not against taking on cars that aren’t quite as local so if a personal visit is a bit of a stretch, give the workshop a call on (07) 5571 7843 or visit www.toprpm.com.au.
