Top Fuel Championship Battle Reaches Penultimate Round in Sydney

The Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship has reached the penultimate round for its second season, with the championship battle still wide open at the top of the table.

The May 5-6 event at Sydney Dragway will host 200 plus racers across a bunch of categories, with the 12,000hp flame-throwing Top Fuel dragsters headlining the show. We’ll also see nine 3,500hp Top Doorslammers and seven wild 1500hp+ nitro-powered Top Fuel Motorcycles, as well as Pro Mods and a line-up of Australia’s best sportsman racers.

Heading into the penultimate round, Jim Read Racing have a make-or-break weekend ahead, with the team and driver Phil Read currently sitting second in the championship standings on 410 points, just 30 points behind leader Damian Harris and 30 points ahead of the third-placed Xiberras.

With the points battle so tight at the top of the table, how this weekend’s racing unfolds could decide the title chase, or just as easily, blow it all wide open ahead of the final round round of racing this June.

“We are definitely excited to be racing at home in Sydney this weekend and we are expecting it to be an intense event, with championships well and truly on the line,” said three-time champion Phil Read.

“Of course, our aim is to close the gap to Damian Harris, and at the same time, keep Peter Xiberras behind us."

In other news, the newest member to the Top Fuel fraternity; WA local Kyle Putland will extend the Top Fuel field at this weekend’s event, with his first trip over East in the Worx Equipment Top Fuel Dragster. With two championship rounds now under his belt, we’re excited to see how Kyle and the team fares at this weekends event.

With the championship battles across the board so tight, we can be sure that no driver or team will leave anything on the table this weekend, leading to an action packed two days of serious action.

“The title battles are really exciting right now,” Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship and ADRC promoter, Andy Lopez, said.

“In Top Fuel, up until now Damian Harris has had a good grip on the top, but following our last event in Perth he has former champion Phil Read and reigning champion Peter Xiberras nipping furiously at his heels, and it really could go either way.

“In Top Doorslammer, Kelvin Lyle has a bit of a buffer ahead of his closest rivals after a really strong season to date, but with names like reigning champ Daniel Gregorini and ten-time title winner John Zappia right behind him, there is absolutely no room for complacency.”

Nitro Champs will feature two Top Fuel qualifying rounds on Friday the 5th of May at 4.30pm and 7.00pm, and then three rounds of racing on Saturday the 6th of May at 2.00pm, 4.30pm and 7.00pm.
