Veteran U.S. Funny Car racer Tommy Johnson Jr. returns to Australia piloting a championship-winning hot rod with his eyes on the prize at Sydney Dragway for Round 1 of the NDRC Nitro Funny Car championship.
“I’m so excited to be coming back to Australia to race in the Aeroflow Funny car Series.” Says TJ with a huge grin on his face. “It’s a huge honour to be asked to drive one of Graeme Cowin’s cars, what he has done for the funny car series in Australia is amazing.”
Tommy Johnson Jr has competed in over 450 NHRA events with 25 Wally trophies on his wall. He is one of only 17 drivers to sit behind the wheel of both Top Fuel Dragsters and Nitro Funny Cars, Johnson brings not only experience to his run in Australia but also a winning mentality.
“Ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to race in Australia. Now to say I have driven a Nitro Funny Car and a Top Fuel Dragster, it’s a lifelong dream come true.”
Like most people, drag racing is all about family for Tommy so he’s taking on this adventure with his own. “My parents always supported my racing career, and I am so proud that I’m able to bring my mom on this trip to watch me compete down under!
“Having watched previous rounds online from home, I know how competitive the Aeroflow Nitro Funny cars are, so I know I have my work cut out for me to bring the trophy back to the US. I’ve been given last season’s championship-winning hot rod from the Aeroflow stable, so it’s all business from here!”
The first round of the NDRC Nitro Funny Car championship kicks off at Sydney Dragway on October 27th and 28th 2023. See the 11,000hp, 500km/h flame throwing missiles compete side by side as well as Pro Alcohol, Pro Stock, Pro Mod and the Aeroflow Performance Sportsman Series Eastern Conference.
