Tokyo's Highways Go Digital - A 1:1 Recreation in Assetto Corsa

Ever thought about living out your own Wangan Midnight fantasy? Well now you can, right from your own home thanks to this Assetto Corsa mod that recreates Tokyo's famous toll roads.

The world of sim racing is as popular as ever these days, with some wild mods allowing more people to get behind the wheel of their favourite cars. Thanks to a dedicated modding community you can basically tackle any course and car combo you like (you can even smash tyres on a virtual Summernats pad), but the Shutoko Revival Project has been one of the most ambitious projects we've ever seen. This project ambitiously aims to bring the famed Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway, commonly referred to as the "Shutoko," into the digital realm.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway is a network of toll roads that intricately weave throughout Tokyo. Over the years, it has gained a mythical status, especially among car enthusiasts and the underground racing scene. Many will remember the highway from iconic video games, manga, and anime like "Wangan Midnight" or "Initial D". It represents not just a series of roads but a cultural touchstone in Japanese automotive lore.

The Shutoko Revival Project was birthed out of a desire to give Assetto Corsa players a chance to experience this iconic expressway network in as detailed a representation as possible.

The modders behind SRP painstakingly recreated every curve, exit, and detail of the Shutoko. Utilizing a mix of real-world data, countless hours of videos, and on-the-ground reconnaissance, the team built an astoundingly accurate rendition of the highway system. It wasn't just about the road's geometry but also capturing its very essence - the neon lights, the towering skyscrapers, and the unique vibe of Tokyo at night.

Mixed in with a variety of mods that simulate some of the most iconic JDM cars, it makes for an experience like no other. Some people even take it a step further, using VR headsets for some true immersion. It's a pretty epic project, and it is updated on the regular. The most recent update added the Shinjuku route from C1 all the way to Shinjuku railway station.

If you're looking for a unique sim racing experience and want a break from getting punted at turn one on Monza, give this one a crack!
