Thirlmere Fryers member Kresi Basanovic has created this absolutely stunning HG sedan that looks too good to drive, let alone do burnouts in.
Burnout cars used to get a quick tart-up on the outside, plenty of power under the bonnet, a set of stockies with sacrificial tyres on the back, and that was about the extent of it. Things have dramatically changed over the years however, and burnout cars have evolved into ‘event’ cars that are so well-presented that they look spectacular even when there isn’t smoke pouring off the back tyres.
Kresi Basanovic’s 1971 Holden HG Kingswood sedan is one such vehicle, looking far too neat to even drive let alone do circle work on the burnout pads at major events like Powercruise and Summernats. The project started in 2009 and when we point out that he did the majority of work himself at TSR Smash Repairs you begin to understand why he’s not so shy about thrashing such a stunning-looking car.
With friends and family equally passionate about building spectacular skid machines Kresi was also not short on willing helpers. The result is a car that has shaved bodywork, an adjustable 5-link rear end with coilovers, extra chassis bracing, and mini-tubs capable of housing 20x13in rear wheels.
The engine bay is just as impressive. It's show-car smooth and contains a supercharged 572ci Chev Big Block V8 with Merlin III alloy heads. Held in with engine plates it gulps vast quantities of E85 through a pair of Holley 950cfm carbies. The rest of the driveline consists of a Turbo 400 3-speed and a 9in diff with a braced sheet-metal housing from Competition Engineering.
To prove that Kresi is more than willing to drive the wheels off his spectacular HG, above is a clip of FRYHRD entertaining the masses at Summernats 27.
A special compilation magazine called Powercruise Holdens features ten examples of iconic Aussie event cars just like FRYHRD, and it’s available right now.
