Summernats Spotlight: Danny’s XD Falcon Pro Drift Car

While the world of drifting has evolved significantly since its early days of sending bent up Corollas and dirty Nissans around Japanese mountain passes, not many can say they’ve turned an Aussie V8 touring car icon into a tyre-murdering sideways machine.

Danny's journey with drifting began way back in 2004 when he stumbled upon a small article in the NT News about a local drift have-a-go day. Not knowing much about the whole drifting thing, but with a background in speedway racing (and the fact nobody said you couldn’t drift a Falcon), Danny headed to his local stomping ground Hidden Valley Raceway with a paddock-basher 351 Clevo powered XD, and acquainted himself with the armco barrier rather quickly.

For many, this might have been a rather discouraging moment, but for Danny? Not a chance. He’d been bitten by the bug almost instantly, and so began his almost 20 year history in the sport. Fast-forward to today, and Danny is still as passionate as ever, putting on shows for crowds around the country with his sideways antics, though now with a different XD Falcon.

While Danny is the first to admit an XD Falcon is not necessarily the most desirable chassis for drifting, he’s spent considerable time with a grinder in hand cutting up and shaping up the Falcon to accomodate things like custom angle kits, modified suspension and the like to get the old Aussie Falcon sideways.

The Falcon stays powered by Ford, however the factory Clevo has been replaced by a FG F6 Barra (of course) with a Garrett GTW3884R turbo strapped to the side, 2200cc Bosch injectors, Turbosmart 60mm Progate with screamer and engine management done by Haltech. Surprisingly, there’s also a bunch of factory Ford parts left over that still run strong today.

Danny competes in the Hi-Tec Drift All-Stars, amidst a sea of late ’90s Japanese cars, travelling across Australia pushing the Barra, and putting on a mad show for crowds across Australia. It was great to catch up with the man behind the project at Street Machine Summernats 35, and chat about all things XDrift Industries. Check it out!
