Following his action-packed UK tour, which included memorable visits to the renowned Lord's Cricket Ground, Wimbledon, and the adrenaline-fuelled Goodwood Festival of Speed, Oscar Piastri is setting his sights on Europe. After securing a commendable fourth place at the British Grand Prix, he's now eager to make his mark at the Hungarian Grand Prix, armed with optimism and the MCL60.
Piastri's impressive performance at Silverstone marked his debut run with the advanced MCL60. Although the enhancement was a dramatic improvement, particularly after his challenging stint at Spielberg, Piastri remains prudent about the potential track-dependent advantages of his McLaren car.
We're slightly cautious that maybe Silverstone suited us quite well as a track because we're generally very quick in the high-speed corners," Piastri opined. "Budapest will be a big test of whether we are quick everywhere, but regardless, this is certainly a step in the right direction."
The Australian sensation feels that the superior MCL60 enables him to contest established teams like Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Despite being relatively new to the F1 arena, he cherishes the exhilaration of leading the pack, reminiscent of his earlier racing career.
While the old and updated versions of the MCL60 differ significantly on paper, Piastri asserts that the feel of the cars is rather consistent. The critical modification lies in the grip and equilibrium of the car, resulting in better lap timings.
Emphasising the importance of swift adaptation, Piastri shared,
It was nice to jump into the car and not have to adapt to it very much and go quicker. Our one-lap pace took a good step forward, but our race pace was also clearly a lot better."
The Hungaroring, a staple on the Formula 1 calendar since 1986, is notorious for its technical demands, where downforce and grip are critical over sheer speed. Although Piastri has honed his skills on a simulator, he acknowledges that the real challenge will unfold on the actual track.
I would say we are maybe expecting Hungary to be a little bit more difficult than Silverstone as there are a lot more slow-speed corners, which are generally a bit weaker for us"
he explained. Nonetheless, Piastri's optimism remains unscathed. He believes that a strong performance in Budapest could signify a powerful presence in subsequent races.
McLaren's performance surge in Formula 1 has stirred up the grid, with five different drivers claiming second place behind leader Max Verstappen in recent races. The compact gap, exemplified by a mere 0.250s margin between Norris and Hamilton at Silverstone, shows the intensifying fight amongst Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ferrari, McLaren, and Alpine. McLaren's bounceback, according to Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, is heartening for the sport, demonstrating that strategic upgrades can substantially alter a car's performance.
Stella, McLaren's engineer, emphasises that while teams often draw inspiration from each other's designs, simple imitation doesn't yield success. Integrating new concepts usually initially leads to a drop in performance, since the car has been optimised around previous designs. The critical factor lies in identifying concepts with high development potential.

McLaren had initially aimed to contend with top teams by the season's end. Still, their recent showing at Silverstone came as a welcome surprise. Stella suggests that the next move is to ensure consistent performance across diverse tracks, using recent upgrades as a springboard to ascend further up the grid. The long-term vision for McLaren is to compete for podiums next season and victories thereafter. However, Stella emphasises that delivering results is contingent on the factual improvements brought to the car.
As Piastri prepares for Hungary, it's worth reflecting on the surprising turn of events for McLaren this season. From the introduction of the upgraded MCL60 to Piastri's accelerating performance, McLaren's trajectory has indeed been unpredictable.
