Monster Maybach

Monster Maybach

Many of you may remember when last year the media universe exploded with news that rap duo Kayne West and Jay Z had absolutely destroyed a perfectly good 2004 Maybach 57, and if you didn't hear about it, well you have now. The task of destroying the $300,000 vehicle was undertaken as part of making the film clip for their song "Otis". In the clip, the pair, aided by some men in white suits who really should have known better, transform the car from a stylish beauty queen into a vulgar piece of metal reminiscent of Frankenstein's monster. Somehow the song went on to earn the pair a Grammy award, and Jay-Z's album Watch The Throne went on to sell quite well.

Despite this, and the fact that the pair justified destroying the vehicle in the clip as the proceeds from its sale would go to charity, the question needs to be asked, why destroy such an expensive vehicle? If the pair really were interested in giving money to charity they would of taken the $300,000 written a cheque and given it straight to charity. If they were really interested in cars and motoring they wouldn't have destroyed such a pristine vehicle.

All that aside, the car sold this week at auction for a measly $60,000USD. It seems that even the art community wasn't interested in owning this piece of musical destruction. Quite frankly we don't blame them, and the charity should feel upset they are missing out on an extra $240,000USD, which they should have got in the first place.

If you haven't seen it, below is the music video showing the car and the process by which the two went about destroying the vehicle.
