In The Build: Wild Chevy Apache Gasser

We are absolutely living for this supercharged V8 retro racer!

There’s something really cool about the renaissance of 50s and 60s American trucks, with a stack of sweet retro pick ups being built around the country.

However, this one in the build at Ministry of Fabrication in Wollongong took our fancy - instead of being built as a low ’n’ slow street cruiser or an elite level show car, this Chevy Apache is getting a gasser-styled drag car makeover, and we’re digging it!

Gasser styling dictates a few core design elements, including the unique flat-plane height thanks to front leaf springs and a solid front axle.

There’s also the mandate for a pretty wild paint scheme - heavy metal flake paint jobs with paneling and scalloping, there isn’t anything too far out for a gasser!

While the Apache is yet to go in to colour, we can see that it’s been modified for a full tilt front end which again, is fairly common ot the gasser style.

Under the hinged front assembly we can see a blown Chev’ V8 sitting between the rails, with mandatory gasser zoomie pipes dumped right at the firewall. We reckon this small block will make an absolute racket!

Ministry of Fabrication was charged with building out the IHRA-spec roll cage - not a simple task on a vehicle like the Apache as the owner still wanted to be able to separate the cab and chassis.

However, we think you’ll agree that the team knocked it out of the ballpark. It looks as sensational as it does functional.

Keen eyes will spot that the chassis isn’t wanting for much when it comes to drag racing goodies - a sheet metal nine-inch hangs between the rear meats on a coilover-sprung four-link.

We’re hanging to see more shots of this car as it nears completion.
