Hewitt Racing Monaro Building

Check out this epic Aussie drag Monaro build including the insane Hemi powerplant that will push this car deep into six-second territory!

The moment triumphantly arrived when Craig revealed his epic engine combination, and the 511 cubic inch Hemi that the boys are currently bolting into the car will be more than capable of propelling the car down the quarter in record time.

Based around a KB cast block, the 511ci Hemi is purpose-built for what Craig wants to achieve with the car, and features more tasty trinkets than one could possibly ever dream. The cylinder heads is where it all happens, and Craig has a pair of one-off Noonan Race Engineering full billet heads to bolt on, individualised by their inclusion of water jackets – a mandatory ruling for the race category the car is destined for. These are the same heads found on 3500hp Top Doorslammers and Top Alcohol dragsters and funny cars! “They’re still water jacketed as you must run an operational cooling system,” Craig explains.

Sucking in the good stuff is a mammoth 14/71 Kobelco Superman High Helix blower. “It’ll make enough, and we’ll show that at the track. It will be well into the 2,000hp range,” Craig describes.

The Monaro is currently out at Joe Gauci’s Profab Motorsport Fabrications, being pampered and having the engine setup made to fit in the race car’s chassis and shell. Craig tells us that it’s all being fitted up at Joe’s, before it’s off to APM to get the engine built up. All the bits are there and ready to go.

Have a go at the mammoth exhaust merge collectors on the thing! And when we say that these are big, we mean that they make Bigfoot look like a pint-sized puppy dog. The header sections merge into an ultimate pipe size that measures five, count-‘em, five inches!

Joe Gauci at Profab has mentioned that the pipes certainly didn’t just drop straight into the Monaro bodywork with that sizeable 500 plus cube engine, and made for an incredible amount of work to make fit, including an alteration of the steering rack.

Fred from Protrans Performance Automatics has supplied everything gear-related, and Craig has one of the most brutally tough gearboxes around in the form of a Reid Racing Superglide filled with as much exotic gadgetry that you could possibly fathom. It’s bulletproof in every sense of the word, but also damned light, with the tail-housing for example weighing in at just two kilo’s flat. Impressive, to say the very least!

To really solidify just how operative the car will ultimately be, Craig has even fabricated in an (excuse the alliteration) fully functioning fuel filler flap!

The car will ultimately run a great deal of factory dash and cluster gear as well (though with the addition of a Racepak dash), just to keep the factory flavour of the car alive and well. Forget custom sheetmetal and tinned alloy sections in here.

Just a little sneak peak of the interior, complete with that gorgeous carbon fibre seat. This bad boy can literally be lifted up with two fingers.

Weight saving of the most intriguing kind is always a delight to see

The firewall and parachute mounting is also a high priority, and Craig tells us that a few shock sensors here and there are going in for the Racepak dash.

Pass us the drool bucket, please. As this is one tasty rear-end. Simply the best competition Penske shocks are used throughout

Craig is still deciding on a few different colour and graphic combinations, so stay tuned to see what the lads come up with!
