Ferrari team leader Frederic Vasseur concedes that the team’s underwhelming performance at the British Grand Prix was exacerbated by excessive caution concerning tyre degradation, leading to a conservative strategy.
Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had started the race well, securing fourth and fifth place in the qualifying round. However, they fell short on the actual race day, ending up ninth and tenth, respectively. Their strategy was derailed due to a late-race Safety Car's intervention.
Vasseur suggests that the team’s apprehension about tyre lifespan might have played a role in the disappointing outcome. Ferrari has been working to improve tyre durability after facing challenges in this area earlier in the season.
"Starting P4 and P5, we had the feeling after qualifying that we could have done a much better job than this,” said Vasseur.
He believes that the team was overly conservative in their tyre management and did not push enough.
As the Formula One season shifts to the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest next weekend, Vasseur is hopeful that the track will better accommodate the Ferrari SF-23. However, he emphasises that achieving top form requires not only a suitable track but also the right setup and weekend preparation.
