Driving out to Queensland Motorsport Park, just twenty-five minutes past Beaudesert, is where the good times begin - country views with your dirt hog strapped to your rig, ready to sling some dirt. Many hustlers rolled through the gates of QMP last weekend, set to camp overnight with their crew of mates and families, followed by loads of spectators from sunrise. Waiting just beyond the entrance was the amazing staff from Fonzie Abbott with caffeinated cups of joy, keeping everyone warm while signing on.
Dressed To Impress
It's quite a sight first thing in the morning to see grown adults walking around the pits dressed as ninja turtles, aliens, and even giant beer cans. Every year, the get-ups get more and more creative. Even crazier are some of the bikes that these hustlers entered in the four classes, across three different mx tracks. All three tracks are different from the next - track one was 'Natural Terrain MX', track two 'Stadium Track', and the third track 'Grass Flat Track'.
Class Of Their Own
The winner of the Small Bike Burners class was a rider on a jet-ski, creating a lot of laughter throughout the day across the three tracks. It was extremely entertaining to see a jet-ski midair over the dirt jumps.
One of the most seat-gripping classes to watch from the Young Henry's bar was the Risky Roads class. Watching Dudley Squires-Grabsch on his Repsol race bike racing a few of the Royal Enfield rebels on a watered-down dirt track built for MX pros is something to be admired.
The Enduro and MX class was hilarious for everyone involved, including the crowd, with the Grim Reaper chasing the likes of Captain Hook over tabletops, and Ace Ventura following up the chase from the rear in his tutu. The last class is a rider favourite, selling out in record time - ‘Old Mates'. This was by far where the costumes came to life. A hustle of pre-nineties rides and a mix of inmates, superheroes, and Leo, Hughan, and the lads from Ellaspede enjoying themselves after years of great work at this event.
The Halftime Show
The halftime show didn't disappoint, with Bell Helmets putting on an expression session for anyone wearing a Bell helmet. The shortened track was perfect for the guys and girls to get out and strut their stuff to the crowd, with plenty of wheelies for the patrons having a feed and brew at the bar. The best hustler in this session took home a brand-new Bell helmet, and the lucky winner was Scott Richardson.
The kids loved every minute of the Stayc Stability Cycle track on the day, scooting around learning to ride electric bikes around a little track with parents and spectators cheering them on. Ray Buchanan of QMP loves the community that comes along with dirt bike riding. "People come here to have a great time and escape the pressures of life. Great events like Dust Hustle and the MX Nationals really create a great atmosphere for mental health these days."
For The Kids
After the day was run and done, the hustlers all united in the Young Henry's bar for a couple of cold brews with new mates, laughing about the stories of the day. The legends from behind the bar, whom you would have seen riding around all day and serving you beers at night, made it even more memorable. The proceeds of the bar went to Traction Moto, a non-profit organization raising money for young people, typically aged 12-15, who find the mainstream classroom a challenge, need some extra help to regulate their behaviour, or develop their confidence, resilience, and strengths.
It's hard to believe this is all jam-packed into one day, and with Dust Hustle 15 just a few short months away, we are gearing up for another massive one in North Brisbane at Mick Doohan Raceway for 'The Big Dance'. Make sure you head over to Dusthustle.com to keep an eye on dates and tickets. This will be another epic local event you don't want to miss out on.
