The story of this highly customised ’65 Mustang coupe starts with its owner winning the 351ci Windsor V8 engine in a raffle.
Brian’s turn of good luck took place at the annual Mustang Roundup in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and it was from winning that prize that he decided he needed to get a custom Mustang built.
Brian did a little of the work himself, but for the most part the project was undertaken by Dan Ambrosio of Ambrosio Concepts. First though, they had to find a suitable shell and they unearthed one not long after the Roundup.
The car was built in just 10 months and the closer you look the more you see that there are quite a significant number of stylistic changes to the body. Some aren’t even obvious when the car is cruising by, such as the reverse-opening bonnet. The colour is a mix of Chrysler Tangerine with some copper pearl in it, and they’ve renamed it Down To My Last Penny.
The car also has a number of chassis upgrades with Mustang II style front suspension, 4-link rear suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, a Tremec 5-speed gearbox and more, plus a retro-style interior with fresh upholstery and Dolphin gauges.
There is a full feature on Brian Cruz’s custom ’65 Mustang in issue 135 of Street Fords, now available in digital form.
