The Newcastle Hillclimb is an event with a long and proud history, and the 57th running will be held this coming weekend. The venue is King Edward Park, normally a public space overlooking the ocean with a speed limit of just 20km/h. It's a tricky and challenging course, and the narrow section with a steep approach and a sharp exit called 'the Pinch' is normally just a walkway.
The event this Sunday is the conclusion of the 2014 NSW Hillclimb Championship, whilst the local Tri-Series will conclude with a separate event at the same temporary track on the public holiday Monday.
To show you some of this history, above is historic coverage of the 1972 event, which was round 1 of that year's Australian Hillclimb Championship. And if you're anywhere near Newcastle this weekend and want to know more about it, visit www.newcastlehillclimb.com
